A Season of change & transition at Los Portales Museum

The beginning of the year at Los Portales Museum has been shaped by preparation, transition, and moments that reminded us how closely the museum is connected to the life of the community around it.

Welcoming a new year!

Hello, fellow readers. January began with anticipation as our team prepared for Vinyl & Vision Board Night, an event centered on music and creativity. Plans were well underway when an unexpected and rare winter storm moved through San Elizario. With winter weather affecting travel and safety throughout the area, the decision was made to postpone the event. While the snowfall was brief, it made clear that rescheduling was the best choice for our visitors and staff. The event has since been moved to Saturday, February 7, at 4:00 PM, allowing us to continue preparing for an experience that feels welcoming and intentional.

An Unexpected January Snowfall

The snowfall itself became one of January’s most memorable moments. Seeing Los Portales Museum and the surrounding historic district covered in snow was something many of us hadn't seen in a while. The familiar adobe structures and walkways took on a completely different appearance, offering a quiet and striking reminder that even the most familiar places can surprise us. Visitors stopped by to take photos, take in the scenery, and share in a rare winter moment that quickly became part of the community’s shared memory.

From preservation to new perspectives

As January came to a close and February quietly began, the museum shifted its focus toward upcoming changes and new opportunities. Inside the gallery, preparations are underway to transition exhibits. The Preservation Texas, Adobe at the Pass Exhibit will be taken down in the coming weeks as the space is readied for a new Juried Art Exhibit, scheduled to be installed during the third week of February. This transition reflects the museum’s continued effort to honor preservation while also making room for new artistic voices and perspectives.

Introducing our walking tours

February also marks the beginning of a new way for visitors to experience the museum and the historic district. Starting this month, Los Portales Museum will be hosting walking tours, which will take place on the first and third Sunday of each month at 11:00 AM. These guided tours invite participants to visit five or more historical locations, offering a deeper look into the stories and history that have shaped San Elizario over time. The first walking tour will take place on Sunday, February 15, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. To celebrate the launch of this new program, the first few visitors to check in will receive a free San Elizario tote bag as a thank you for being part of this first tour.

Moving into February

With a rescheduled community event ahead, a rare winter moment behind us, new tours beginning, and a gallery transformation underway, the start of the year has been a reminder that the museum is always evolving alongside its community. As February continues, we look forward to welcoming visitors back and continuing to share the history, art, and stories that make Los Portales Museum a place of connection and discovery.
